Why
the CRP matters
The
CRP is a regional partnership of eighteen municipalities and one First Nation
in the Calgary area. After years of inter-jurisdictional challenges these
municipalities decided in undertake land use planning as regional partnership.
The province has recognized the importance of this partnership formally by
stating its plan will be adopted as part of the provincial land-use framework.
When the final plan is adopted, it will be considered binding on issues as
diverse as development, conservation, services, waste water, and
transportation. The
degree to which ecological goods and services are protected will be front and
center to the discussion.
The
CRP needs to hear from you!
The
CPR is offering a series of open houses across its member municipalities
beginning today, March 3 in Okotoks,
March 4th in Canmore and March 5th in Airdrie.
The
CRP's website remains fairly broad about the plan and materials to be disclosed
at open houses, however, you can speak up for:
- Minimizing
additional land footprint through the intensification of existing settlements and
promotion of smart growth
- Maintenance
of open landscapes and the protection of wildlife corridors
- Source water protection of headwaters, and recharge areas for watercourses as
well as riparian habitat and wetlands
- Clear development and service plans that do not offer back door routes to
unplanned settlements
- Protection of agricultural lands
- Water
Matters plans to engage in this process and provide more information to the
public as it becomes available. Regular updates will be posted to the Water Matters and Alberta by
Design websites.
